Margarita Cabrera and Justin Favela Roll Into Denver in "Desert Rider"

Desert Rider: Dreaming in Motion, Denver Art Museum, Denver, CO

See a brand new piñata piece by Justin Favela and an installation of cascading Hummers from Margarita Cabrera in Desert Rider, an exhibition celebrating the connections between transportation, landscape, and identity in our nation’s Southwest desert region.

Favela's piñata lowrider examines the intersection of a Mexican craft tradition and the elaborate artistry of lowrider culture, creating his fantasy ride that pays homage to his hometown of Las Vegas with its metallic flair, invoking the over-the-top glamorous aesthetic of Elvis, Liberace, and Old Vegas.

Cabrera's piece roughly traces the US/ Mexico border, using the example of the manufacturing of General Motors's H3 Hummers to highlight the economic relationship between the two countries that often involves the exploitation of Mexican laborers—leading to hazardous working conditions and pollution from American manufacturing that affects small communities long after the cars have come off the assembly line.
